Spunk Library는 방대한 양 의 아나키즘 관계 문헌들을 수록하고 있다. 아래 글은 1995년 스펑크 라 이브러리 관계자에 의하여 작성된 것으로 보이며, 노동계급이라는 사회 경제적 계급에 대한 아나키스트들의 입장을 쉽게 소개하고 있다고 여겨져 서 번역을 해보았다. 이 글은 노동 계급에 대하여 전통적인 맑스-레닌주 의자들과는 다른 견해를 가지고 있으며, 이는 본인의 입장과도 일치함을 밝힌다. 이러한 류의 글을 번역하는 경험이 일천한 관계로 혹시 생경한 표현이나 이해가 어려운 부분이 있다면 본인에게 멜을 보내주기 바란다.

First of all, a "class" is a group of human beings who share common interests, because they experience common conditions.

우선, "계급(class)"은 동일한 상태를 경험함으로 인해 공동의 이해를 갖 는 인간들의 집단을 뜻한다.

The working class (sometimes called "proletariat", a French term) consists of all people who must work (another word for "work" is "labor") for someone else in order to make money with which to survive. This includes factory workers, maintenance people, programmers, cooks, dishwashers, secretaries, firemen, etc.

노동 계급(프랑스어로 프롤레타리아-proletariat-라고도 불리움)은 생존에 필요한 돈을 벌기 위해 다른 사람을 위해서 일(work, 또는 노동 labour) 하는 모든 사람들로 구성되어 있다. 이에는 공장 노동자, 관리 노동자 (maitenance people), 프로그래머, 요리사, 접시 닦이, 비서, 소방수 등이 포함된다.

Regardless of a designation of government employees, temp workers, or contract employees, one is still a member of the working class due to the reliance on physical (or mental) work for a wage or salary which pays for ones living expenses (food, clothing, housing medical care, transportation, entertainment).

공무원, 임시직 노동자, 계약 노동자 등의 명칭에 상관없이, 생활 비용(음 식, 의류, 주거, 의료, 교통, 유흥 등)을 충당할 임금을 벌기 위해 육체(또 는 정신)에 의존하는 모든 사람이 노동계급의 구성원이다.

It also includes artists and tradesmen, because they work for those whom will buy their goods, or they work for some employer who pays for their efforts.. this includes basket weavers, potters, painters, illustrators, tattoo artists, small-time publishers (who work alone to produce a publication), recyclable bottle-collectors, and prostitutes (sex-workers).

노동계급은 또한 예술가와 직능인(tradesman)을 포함한다. 왜냐하면 그들 은 자신들의 상품을 구매할 사람을 위해서 일하거나, 그들에게 임금을 지 급하는 고용인들을 위해서 일하기 때문이다. 이러한 범주에 포함되는 사 람들은 바구니 짜는 사람(basket weaver), 도자기 제작자, 화가, 삽화가, 문신 기술자(tattoo artist), 소규모 출판업자(간행물을 혼자 제작하는 사람 - 스코잉크: 팬진 제작자나 그 머시냐 손모씨를 생각함 됨), 재생 병 수집 가(recycle bottle collector), 창녀(sex worker) 등이 포함된다.

The working class does not include those who live off of the work efforts of those in the above mentioned category: employers and landlords... these individuals make up the category of capitalist class because they live off of the concentration of wealth (also called capital) taken through profits generated by the efforts of the working class.

고용인, 지주/건물주(landlord)와 같이 위의 기술된 범주에 포함되는 사람 들의 노동을 착취하여 살아가는 사람들은 노동계급에 포함하지 않는다. 노동계급의 노동에 의해 창출된 이윤을 통해 축적된 부(자본-capital-이라 고 불리기도 한다)에 기반하여 생활하는 이들은 자본가 계급(capitalist class)을 구성한다.

Individuals who pay rent or the unemployed are by default part of the working class because the individual who pays rent must give some of his/her money (generally earned through work) to someone else in order to continue living there. The unemployed must constantly look for work if they cannot somehow survive some way without it, and are always a "reserve" work-force, generally eager to take a decent job when available.

세입자들이나 실업자들은 자동적으로 노동계급으로 간주된다. 왜냐하면 집세를 내는 사람은 계속적으로 어떠한 곳에서 주거하기 위하여 (일반적 으로 노동을 통하여 획득한) 자신의 돈의 일부분을 다른 사람에게 주어야 하기 때문이다. 실업자들은 직장 없이 생존할 수 있는 방법이 없다면 계 속적으로 직장을 찾아야하고, 그러므로 항상 일반적으로 괜찮은 직장을 찾는대로 일할 태세가 갖추어진 산업 예비군("reserve" work-force)이다.

Some people say the working class does not exist anymore or is insignificant. It is true that the nature of the work-force has changed over the last hundred years, but it's quite obvious that everywhere one looks one sees people working for others. In fact, many monotonous, low paying factory jobs still exist, but such jobs have been exported to other countries in the world (outside of the United States) where paying for human labor is cheap due to weak unions & disrespect for human rights (for example, when Chile nationalized it's copper industry in the early 1970's so that American corporations no longer could extract profits from them, closed copper mines in the United States became operational again for a time.)

일부 사람들은 노동계급이 더 이상 존재하지않으며, 또는 무의미하다고 말한다. 지난 수백년 간 노동 인구(work force)의 성격이 바뀐 것이 사실 이지만, 어디를 보더라도 다른 사람을 위해서 일하는 사람들을 볼 수 있 는 것은 분명하다. 사실, 단조롭고, 낮은 임금을 지불하는 공장 노동은 아 직도 수없이 존재한다. 그러나, 그런 직장들은 취약한 노동 조합과 인권에 대한 비존중으로 노동 비용이 싼 다른 나라로(미국 밖으로) 수출되어갔다 (예를 들면, 1970년대 초반 칠레가 미국 회사들의 이윤 착취를 근절하기 위하여 자국 내 구리 산업을 국유화했을 때, 미국내 폐쇄 구리 탄광들이 재가동된 바 있다)

The term "middle class" is often used by the mainstream media, erroneously, to refer to most Americans who are in fact working class. The "middle class" actually refers to a section of the population which owns small businesses, as opposed to high-level managers and owners of corporations. "Middle Class" is sometimes known as "petit-bourgeoisie" (a French term)... the "petty capitalist class" or "small capitalist class". Some working class individuals who earn high wages, own credit cards, mortgages or deal in the stock market consider themselves "middle class", but the fact remains that they still must work to pay off bills and continue to survive, unless, of course, they run a business.

'중간 계급(middle class)'이라는 용어는 미국 내 주류 언론매체에 의하여 실제로는 노동계급에 해당되는 대부분의 사람들을 왜곡하여 지칭할 때 쓰 인다. 사실은 중간계급이라는 말은 인구 중 고위급 관리자나 회사 소유자 들과 대립되는 의미에서 소규모 사업체를 소유한 사람들을 의미하는 말이 다. '중간계급'이라는 말은 흔히 '쁘띠 부르즈와지(petit-bourgeoisie프랑스 어)'... '소자본가 계급(petty capitalist class, small capitalist class)'. 고임 금을 지급받고, 크레딧 카드를 소유하고, 몰기지(mortgage)를 하거나 증 권시장에 관여하는 일부 노동계급 사람들은 자신을 중간계급으로 간주할 수 있으나 실제로는 자신이 사업체를 운영하는 경우가 아니라면 각종 고 지서를 납부하고, 계속적으로 생존하기 위해서 노동을 해야한다.

Those who run businesses with no employees are simply tradesmen who work for those who will buy their goods (as mentioned above).. tradesmen become members of the petit-bourgeoisie the moment they hire another human being to take their place in maintaining the physical effort necessary to earn money, while the tradesman becomes a manager who's main job is to see that the working individual(s) he or she has hired do not waiver from their tasks. This employer has the choice of continuing to do physical work, or he may hire enough people so that he no longer has to do any physical work at all. The fact that he has the choice to not partake in physical effort to earn money, and the fact that those whom he employs are under the constant threat of losing their jobs and living wages if they do not work is what places the worker and the employer into different social classes: the capitalist's interest are in acquiring wealth and keeping the employees in line. The workers interests are to not get fired, and to earn their wage while preserving comfort and as much personal freedom for themselves.

종업원 없이 사업체를 운영하는 사람은 단지 위에서 언급한 것처럼 그들 의 상품을 살 사람들을 위해서 노동하는 직능인일 뿐이다... 직능인은 돈 을 벌기 위해서 육체 노동을 다른 사람을 고용하여 대신 시키는 순간부터 쁘띠 부르즈와지 계급의 구성원이 되고, 그가 고용한 개인들이 작업을 게 을리하지않나 주시하는 경우에는 중간 관리자(manager)가 된다. 이 직능 인 겸 고용인은 자신이 직접 육체 노동을 계속하거나 아니면 직접 육체 노동을 계속할 필요가 없도록 충분한 사람들을 고용하거나 둘 중에서 선 택할 수 있다. 그가 돈을 벌기 위해 육체노동에 참여하지않을 선택권을 가지고 있다는 사실과 그가 고용한 사람들은 노동을 하지않으면 직장과 생활 임금을 잃는다는 계속적인 위협 하에 놓여 있다는 사실이 노동자와 고용인을 각기 다른 사회 계급으로 격리시키는 것이다. 자본가들의 이해 는 부를 획득하고 종업원들을 확보하는 것이고, 종업원들의 이해는 편안 함과 그 만큼의 개인적 자유를 유지하면서 해고 당하지않고 임금을 획득 하는 것이다.

Capitalists concentrate wealth through the efforts of more and more individuals working for them, and more and more acquisitions of land, machinery, and other companies... eventually owning means of communications & news (TV, phone companies, radio stations, newspapers, computer networks), owning means of food production & distribution (farms, supermarkets), owning land, factories, apartment complexes, etc. Eventually capitalists own everything of importance to human survival and happiness this way, which gives them a considerable amount of power and influence over the lives of the rest of the people on the planet. At this point, capitalists are designated to be members of the ruling class. They "rule" over the land and all other things, because they own and control them.

자본가들은 더욱 더 많은 개인들이 자신들을 위해서 일하는 것을 통하여, 그리고 더욱 더 많은 땅, 기계, 다른 회사들을 획득함으로서 부를 축적한 다... 그러다가 결국엔 통신 및 뉴스(TV, 전화 회사, 라디오 방송국, 신문 사, 컴퓨터 네크워크), 음식 생산 및 유통(농장, 슈퍼마켓), 공장, 땅, 아파 트 단지 등까지 획득하게 되는 것이다. 이런 식으로 자본가들은 인간 생 존과 행복 영유에 필요한 모든 것을 장악하게 되는 것이고, 이를 통하여 지상의 다른 모든 사람들에게 상당한 권력과 영향력을 행사할 수 있게 된 다. 이 시점에 자본가는 지배계급의 구성원이 된다. 그들은 모든 것들을 소유하고 통제할 수 있는 권한을 가지고 '지배'한다.

The working class individual can quickly come to the conclusion that unless they see themselves as somehow becoming a member of the capitalist class, or further, the ruling capitalist class, their interests will be forever different from those of the capitalists.

노동계급의 구성원은 자신이 자본가 계급의 구성원이 되거나, 더욱 나아 가 지배 자본가 계급의 구성원이 되는 것이 아니라면, 자신들의 이해는 영원히 자본가들의 이해와는 다를 수밖에 없다는 결론에 도달할 수 있을 것이다.

As the pressure for increased work and less benefits increases on the backs of the working class over time, the individual worker must eventually see her or his common rational self-interest inherent in securing his or her own liberty, freedom and comfort, constrained by a capitalist system, by overthrowing and abolishing the capitalist class, and creating a new society which is not based on capitalist class rule.

노동 시간의 증대와 각종 혜택의 감소가 노동계급의 어께 위에 오버타임 (overtime 시간 외 노동)의 부담을 증가시키는 지금, 개인 노동자는 자신 의 이성적인 이해가 자본가 계급을 타도/폐지하여 자본가계급 지배에 기 초하지않은 새로운 사회를 건설함으로서 자본주의 체제에 의해 억압당하 고 있는 자신의 자유와 편안(comfort)을 확보하는 것에 있음을 볼 수 있 어야한다.
